Information about Zermatt

Zermatt is car-free and situated on 1620 meters above sea level in south-west Switzerland. The idyllic village in the Matterhorn-Valley, nestling between impressive mountains and glaciers, is offering a fantastic panorama with 38 4000-meter-peaks. Well-known because of the Matterhorn, the healthy climate and the varied tourism offer, Zermatt is an international meeting point.

Zermatt mountain summer

Hiking, biking, climbing, alpine tours and summer skiing are popular attractions in summer as well as in the colourful autumn. More than 1000 botanical species decorate the lush meadows above Zermatt. The highest summer skiing area is made accessible by 6 ski lifts and 1 cable car. A visit in the glacier palace up there is a must for anyone… The natural ice grotto beneath the cable car station “Matterhorn Glacier Paradise” (Klein Matterhorn) on 3810 meters above sea level delivers insight into the fascinating world of snow and ice.

Indian Summer in Zermatt

Autumn in Zermatt is the best time for unique photo subjects and wonderful pictures. Clear and strong colours form this special time of the year. Steel blue sky, snow-covered peaks, yellow, green and dark-green larches as well as rubiginous and green meadows are changing in a unique play of colours. Numerous hiking trails are inviting to romantic autumn walking-tours in the colourful landscape. Depending on the weather conditions, the higher located trails may be open until end of October.

Winter dream Zermatt

Whether skiing snowboarding, tobogganing or hiking, every winter sportsman gets his money worth in Zermatt. 350 km slopes allow a varied skiing pleasure with unique scenery in the international skiing area Switzerland-Italy. Snow- and funparks, tobogganing runs, snowshoe hiking as well as 30 km prepared winter hiking trails are offering an alternative enjoyment.

Late spring

Spring begins in Zermatt, when it is already over elsewhere. The climatic relations extend the skiing season until beginning of May. While snow friends still have their fun on the slopes, the first hikers are already enjoying the pleasant temperature in the village.

Matterhorn - Mountain of the mountains

The Matterhorn is the emblem of Zermatt and probably the most photographed mountain in the world. The Majestic and fascinating in every daylight, the 4478 meters high mountain is posing above Zermatt.
July 14th 1865 is an important date in the history of the Matterhorn and Zermatt: The first climb of the Matterhorn. Edward Whymper reached the summit together with the local mountain guides Peter Taugwalder father and son, a mountain guide from Chamonix named Michel Croz and his English companions Reverend Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas and Robert Hadow.
